
Recently profiled in the New York Times Sunday Arts & Leisure section, projection designer Zachary Borovay utilizes cutting-edge computer technology and old world techniques to bring a soulful and organic world to life on stage.
Recent designs include the Off-Broadway production of ROCK OF AGES (dir. Kristen Hanggi), TO BE OR NOT TO BE on Broadway (dir. by Casey Nicholaw), LES MISERABLES National Tour (dir. by Fred Hanson), A CATERED AFFAIR on Broadway (Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding Projection and Video Design; dir. by John Doyle), The Radio City Music Hall 75TH CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR, XANADU on Broadway and National Tour (dir. Christopher Ashley), I LAND at The Culture Project, NYC and East West Players, Los Angeles (dir. Roberta Uno), NERDS: A MUSICAL SOFTWARE SATIRE for the Philadelphia Theater Company (dir. Phil Wm McKinley), the world premiere of the new Jason Robert Brown musical 13 at the Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles, CA (dir. Todd Graff) and Joop van den Ende Theaterproduction's THE WIZ at the Beatrix Theater, Utrecht, Holland (dir. Glenn Casale).
Upcoming projects include PEEPSHOW at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, NV (dir. and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell) and THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON Experience at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Additional projection designs include the American premiere of Peter Eötvös’s ANGELS IN AMERICA: THE OPERA at the Calderwood Pavilion, Boston, MA (dir. Steve Maler), JAPS: THE PRINCESSES OF COMEDY at the Parker Playhouse, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (dir. Dan Fields); NIGHTMARE ROMANCE: THE MUSIC OF BERNARD HERRMANN at the Barbican Centre, London (produced by Danny Kapilian); FAMILIAR STREETS at the Washington D.C. Jewish Literature Festival (dir. Derek Goldman), NY Stage & Film's production of the Charlie Chaplin bio-musical BEHIND THE LIMELIGHT at NYMF (dir. Michael Unger); Lincoln Center Library's exhibit: A Community of Artists - 50 years of the Public Theater and the Off-Broadway and U.S. National tour of COOKIN’. He also designed projections for Pilobolus Dance Theater's BUGONIA (choreographed by Alison Chase) which had its world premiere at the American Dance Festival in Durham, N.C. and is touring internationally.
Zak has also been involved with productions such as GREY GARDENS, IN MY LIFE, Eve Ensler's THE GOOD BODY, RADIO GOLF, Ricky Ian Gordon's opera THE GRAPES OF WRATH, SINATRA - HIS VOICE, HIS WORLD, HIS WAY, GOLDA'S BALCONY, OPEN HEART, DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, RADIANT BABY, Tommy Tune’s PAPARAZZI, NBC-TV’s The Cosby Show: A Look Back, THE MOVIE MUSIC OF SPIKE LEE, HARLEM SONG, Frank Wildhorn’s CAMILLE CLAUDEL, as well as numerous corporate events and museum installations including several exhibits at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
Known for his unique knowledge and experience with music, computer technology, video, photography and theatrical design, Berklee College of Music alumnus Zachary Borovay is also a frequent lecturer and author on the tools and techniques for theatrical projection design and computer technology. His column, titled "The Projection Designer's Toolbox," is published monthly in LiveDesign magazine. Zachary is a proud member of USA 829 and Associated Crafts & Technicians.
