Happy New Year. It was a busy 2005 and 2006 looks even busier (which is always a good thing)!

Wendall Harrington and I are collaborating on projections for Playwrights Horizons production of the highly anticipated new musical "Grey Gardens," based on the documentary film of the same name. It opens in February, right between "JAP" and "Safe Harbor."

Look for some more great news in the coming weeks. As always, please email me with any thoughts, questions, comments or suggestions at zachary@borovay.com.

Just wrapped up work on a new musical called "The 60's Project" directed by Richard Maltby, Jr. of "Ain't Misbehavin," "Miss Saigon" and "Ring of Fire" fame. It was a great experience, and will be chronicled in the January installment of LiveDesign's The Projection Designers Toolbox, so check for that early next year. There are also plans to bring it back to life this summer.

Other exciting news: I'm currently designing a new play titled "JAP: The Princesses of Comedy," which is a celebration of the rich history and heritage of female Jewish comediennes. Written by comedienne Cory Kaheney and directed by Dan Fields, "JAP" will feature four live performers as well as four performers from the past, brought to you by the magic of projections. It will run at the Parker Playhouse in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida January 25-29, and hopefully will come up to New York sometime in April.

I will also be designing projections for a new play by Marta Góes called "A Safe Harbor for Elizabeth Bishop" starring Amy Irving, which will be at Primary Stages in NYC March 21-April 30.

So the big news: the nice folks over at Entertainment Design magazine were kind enough to name me as one of their 5 new talents to watch this year. They have a very nice article in the October issue accompanied by a great photo taken by my friend Peter Cunningham. The article also features a very generous quote from the great Wendall Harrington. Click here to read the online version of the article (I am the third of the five designers profiled in the article).

While we are on the topic of ED (soon to be called LiveDesign) magazine, I am pleased to report that I am going to be writing a monthly column titled "The Projection Designer's Toolbox" for them starting in the December issue. It is an on-the-job product review, where I will discuss software and hardware that I use in various projects that I am working on. It should be a lot of fun. I have A LOT to talk about after completing "In My Life" which opens next Thursday, including a brief adventure into the dark and mysterious world of Windows XP! I will mirror the article in The Toolbox shortly after each issue is published.

As always, please email me with any questions, comments or suggestions at zachary@borovay.com.

This just in: I will be working with Wendall Harrington this fall creating projections for the new Broadway musical "In My Life" by Joe Brooks (composer of the song "You Light Up My Life"). I will also have some big and exciting news coming up next month so stay tuned for those announcements.

I am considering putting together a podcast on technical theater and projection design. I'd love to have a Q&A section, so if anyone out there has a question they'd like to see answered, or any suggestions in general, drop me a line at zachary@borovay.com.

A short news item today. I just got back from upstate NY where I designed some short projections for the workshop of "Behind The Limelight" for New York Stage & Film. It is a fun little musical about Charlie Chaplin. Met a lot of really nice people up there!

The first ever Entertainment Design Broadway Projection Master Classes concluded today, and I must say that the classes were a smash hit! It was an honor to share the stage with such legends, as well as to have the opportunity to share some of my thoughts and experiences with all the wonderful people who attended. And of course, my deepest thanks to the great Wendall Harrington, for not only welcoming me into her world, but for also making me feel like one of "the players." She is an enormously talented artist and a great, great friend.

I am also happy to report that Pilobolus' BUGonia was also a great success. I posted some photos of it in the Pix section. I was very pleased with the results. Yet another Apple Keynote success story! If you are in the New York area, try to check it out when Pilobolus performs at the Joyce Theater in Chelsea in July.

If you are interested in projection design and use a Macintosh, be sure to listen to The Tech Night Owl LIVE internet radio show on Thursday, July 7th to hear Yours Truly discussing the use of Macs in theatrical design. After that, scroll down to the 7/7/05 archive to hear the show. It is also available for free in the iTunes Music Store's podcasting directory.

Lots more info to report soon. Its gonna be a busy summer! As always, you can email me at zachary@borovay.com.

Dead Man Walking opened last week and it is a great looking production. I should have some photos to post very soon, as well as a report in The Studio about my experience working with Apple's fantastic Keynote 2 presentation software.

Some fun upcoming stuff: I will be designing projections for the Pilobolus dance group for their performance at the American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina this June (special thanks to Wendall). Also in June, I will be speaking with Sage Carter about "Getting Your Image To The Screen" at the first ever Entertainment Design Broadway Projection Master Classes in NYC. I got some great feedback from my article "Step by Step" in last months ED. I am hoping to write some more stuff for them in the future!
